UNICEF seeks $17.5 million for emergency response in Zimbabwe

UNICEF has appealed for $17.5 million immediate funding to boost its 120-day emergency response as Zimbabwe battles with a raging cholera outbreak and the effects of collapsing social services. The funds raised will enable UNICEF to scale up its cholera response, provide incentives for teachers to return to work, procure essential medicines for hospitals and importantly, expand its role in the provision of vital supplies and logistics functions necessary to get the social services back on track.

UNICEF intensifies emergency response in Zimbabwe

Amidst an unprecedented cholera outbreak, the collapse of Zimbabwe’s education sector and hospital closures, UNICEF Zimbabwe today announced a rigorous 120 day emergency response to intensify relief efforts to the country’s children. Zimbabwean children, already bearing the brunt of a shattered economy, severe food shortages, HIV/AIDS and failing social services, as well as suffering the acute effects of a lack of food, water and health care, are now succumbing to cholera and are not likely to return to school even after their Christmas break.

2008 UNICEF Snowflake Ball honors Lucy Liu and Gary Cohen

The UNICEF Snowflake Ball will take place on December 3 at Cipriani 42nd Street in New York City. The special evening is an annual black-tie fundraising gala celebrating the lighting of the UNICEF Snowflake and honoring those individuals who have made key contributions to UNICEF’s mission to save and improve children’s lives worldwide. The lighting of the UNICEF Snowflake—which is suspended at the intersection of Fifth Avenue and 57th Street in New York—marks the beginning of the holiday giving season and exists as a beacon of hope, peace and compassion for children around the world.

Early HIV testing and treatment can save newborn lives, new UN report released on World AIDS Day states

Early diagnosis and treatment can significantly improve the prospects for survival of newborn babies exposed to HIV, according to a report released today by four United Nations agencies. The report, titled Children and AIDS: Third Stocktaking Report, was jointly prepared by UNICEF, the World Health Organization, the Joint United Nations Program on HIV/AIDS and the United Nations Population Fund, and was released on World AIDS Day.

Tap Project partners with Watergeeks for 2009 clean water campaign

The UNICEF-supported clean-water campaign known as the Tap Project, today announced that water technology manufacturer, The Watergeeks Laboratories, will become a national supporter of the campaign in 2009—the third year of this award-winning, lifesaving initiative to help UNICEF provide clean water to children around the world.
