Afghanistan vows to protect child rights during conflict
The Government of Afghanistan has reaffirmed its commitment to protecting children affected by the ongoing conflict through the establishment of a Steering Committee on Children in Armed Conflict. The violations covered by these resolutions include recruitment and use of child soldiers, sexual violence,abductions, and attacks against schools and hospitals.

UNICEF report on HIV in Eastern Europe and Central Asia
As thousands of experts from around the world gather at the XVIII International AIDS Conference in Vienna, Austria, UNICEF is drawing attention to one the most pressing concerns in the struggle against HIV – the marginalization of those affected by the disease, especially children. UNICEF's groundbreaking report shows a heavy social impact on young people in Eastern Europe and Central Asia, the only region where HIV infection rates remain clearly on the rise.

New schools bring new hope to communities in Sri Lanka
UNICEF has invested $3.8 million in Sri Lanka to help communities 'build back better'after the 2004 tsunami and decades of civil war. Six new state-of-the-art schools in Ampara district will benefit thousands of students. Each school has been built to 'child-friendly' specifications with trained teachers, adequate resources and appropriate physical and emotional conditions to foster learning.

UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador Mia Farrow made a round of visits to Uganda communities this week. The actor and advocate visited Gulu district, where she met children affected by the conflict with the Lord's Resistance Army (LRA) rebel group, and Kotido district, where she met children affected by inter-ethnic raids.

UNICEF report on 'underground' HIV epidemic in Eastern Europe and Central Asia
According to an upcoming UNICEF report about young people affected by HIV in Eastern Europe and Central Asia, only 24 percent of those in the region who need anti-retroviral treatment receive it, and the stigma associated with HIV infection is rampant – especially when it comes to injecting drug users.The report will be released at the International AIDS Conference this week in Vienna.
