UNICEF responds to nutrition crisis in Niger

Niger remains in the grip of a severe food crisis. To ensure children have access to nutrients and prevent new cases of malnutrition, UNICEF has launched a feeding program to provide mothers with children between 6 months and 2 years of age a ration of oil, sugar and fortified flour. UNICEF is also supplying Plumpy'nut, a ready-to-eat therapeutic food to help treat severely malnourished children referred to health centers across the country.

Pakistan floods affect over 3 million; UNICEF responds for children

More than a million children are in need of emergency assistance after floods devastated large parts of Pakistan. Providing food and safe drinking water to the hundreds of thousands of people whose supplies have been polluted or damaged by the floods, and preventing an outbreak of waterborne diseases such as diarrhea, are the major concerns facing UNICEF in keeping children safe.

Sierra Leone announces free universal health care for mothers and children

Mothers and children under 5 will receive free health care under a new health program launched in Sierra Leone. Traditionally, access to quality health care has been expensive and difficult as the health system struggled to support a population of 5.5 million. With technical and logistical support from UNICEF the government has launched the new program aimed at improving access to health care for women and children in the country.

Children in southern Madagascar still threatened by malnutrition

Seven districts in 3 regions of Madagascar are recovering from a nutrition crisis that affected the south of the country in 2009, mainly due to inadequate rainfall, a prolonged "lean season" and a very limited harvest. The crisis was compounded by limited access to safe water and health services in scattered villages.

UNICEF's child-friendly spaces help children in China's earthquake zone

UNICEF has set up 4 child-friendly spaces to support the long-term recovery of children affected by the earthquake that struck China's Qinghai Province this April. Each provides children with a safe space to interact with peers to help them recover from the psychological distress of the earthquake and take care of their well-being.
