Registering child births in Peru's remotest regions
UNICEF is working with regional governments in Peru to establish registration centers and train civil officers to register child births in the remotest parts of the Amazonian region. Lack of birth registration among indigenous populations results in social exclusion of children, denying them access to education and health services.

Flood-affected children and women in Pakistan need urgent aid
UNICEF is ramping up its relief operation for women and children affected by the flooding in Pakistan. The floods have caused widespread destruction affecting a total of 4 million people, many of them children. With their homes and crops washed away and drinking water sources contaminated children are especially vulnerable to disease and in urgent need of safe water, medicine, food and shelter.

Helping families living with HIV in Angola
UNICEF programs are helping prevent the spread of HIV from pregnant women to their babies in Angola. Through education campaigns and support groups, pregnant women are encouraged to get tested and if positive are provided an ARV drug regimen to protect their unborn babies from the virus.

Unique school brings education opportunities to children in Sarajevo
A child-friendly school built with UNICEF support in Sarajevo is helping bring education opportunities to children from all ethnicities. Many schools in Bosnia and Herzegovina still reflect the ethnic tensions of the mid-1990s housing "two schools under one roof," with separate curricula for different ethnic groups. The "two schools" system often results in children from smaller ethnic groups having no access to education.

UNICEF's disaster relief continues in flood-ravaged Pakistan
UNICEF is providing hygiene kits and water tankers and has repaired more than 70 wells benefiting 800,000 people to help prevent an outbreak of water-borne diseases that are deadly for children. UNICEF has also distributed high-energy biscuits to thousands of children to help address nutrition concerns in face of the rapidly rising food prices in the aftermath of the flood.
